Mulder in Fletcher’s body gains access to Area 51, finds himself in an unhappy marriage, arrested, released and begins to make amends with Fletcher’s wife. A sabotaged UFO flies over and causes “a warp in the space-time continuum” that sees Mulder and Fletcher swap bodies. Who Gets Swapped? Rimmer steals Lister’s body again and flees in Starbug, armed with a duelling pistol and a trunkful of custard donuts. Lister insists on having his body returned. After going for three million years without, Rimmer has lost all discipline and instead of working out, he gorges, neglects Lister’s athlete’s foot and smokes an “entire Cuban tobacco harvest”. This inspires Rimmer to convince Lister that they could swap bodies to get him fit. When Red Dwarf’s auto-destruct mechanism threatens to destroy the ship, Kryten suggests a mindswap to convince the computer that Lister is one of the senior staff in order to cancel it. Who Gets Swapped? Rimmer and Lister, twice, then Rimmer and Cat William Shatner clearly has a ball as the hysterical Janice Lester in Kirk’s body, but in many ways he’s the only one. Spock uses a mind meld to confirm Kirk’s identity in Lester’s body, Lester in Kirk’s orders the real captain executed and eventually the bodyswap reverts to normal entirely without cause or drama in a corridor. She steals his body because as he puts it his “world of starship captains doesn’t admit women”, which begs the questions what could Captains Erica Hernandez from Star Trek: Enterprise and Philippa Georgiou from Star Trek: Discovery possibly have done that pulled the ladder up behind them? Number 6 sums it all up for everyone: “The good doctor’s mind now inhabits a body perhaps not to his liking: The colonel’s. Seltzman transfers Number 6 backs into his own body, but steals the colonel’s body and escapes, leaving Number 2 with his body with the colonel’s mind in it. They are brought back to the Village, where Seltzman insists on transferring the minds back personally. Number 6 in the colonel’s body unravels a mystery to locate Seltzman and Number 2 has had him followed and so finds them both. Stock makes no attempt to impersonate McGoohan, but I’d watch his version of The Prisoner any day. Using some POV shots to show us what he’s seeing and with some Patrick McGoohan dialogue to show us what he’s thinking, Number 6 awakes in his London home and gets the fright of his life when he catches sight of himself in the mirror and Nigel Stock is looking back at him. This is markedly different than the other episodes that make up the rest of this list, using as it does the bodyswap device to cover the fact that our leading man is off shooting Ice Station Zebra. Number 6 regains his freedom in the colonel’s body, while Number 6’s body with the colonel’s mind in it spends the majority of the episode sedated. Using Professor Seltzman’s thought transference machine, Number 2 swaps the minds of Number 6 and a visiting colonel. Who Gets Swapped?
